Bumblebee Pest Control

Bumblebee Pest Control for Your Home and Garden

Bumblebees bring so much good to the world. They produce delicious honey, they cross-pollinate flowers and pollinate other plants, and their buzzing shakes pollen free so that some plants, including tomatoes, can self-fertilize. So how could they be considered pests? Really, it all comes down to their stingers.

Nobody wants to come home to a bumblebee hive stationed near a front door or spend time lingering at a backyard dining table if a colony of bees is buzzing nearby.

Bumblebee colonies generally exist in hives they create themselves, but sometimes they nest in large trees, building wall cavities or other area protected from the elements. They eat mostly flower nectar and pollen, but sometimes they'll be attracted to trash cans and soft drink cans to feast on the sugar inside.

If a nest has become a problem, you can control bumblebee pests with insecticides. The hardest nests to control are those found in walls or attics. Aerosols aren't typically very effective; instead, use bendiocarb, chlorpyrifos or slow-acting boric acid insecticide dust and make sure the product you choose is labeled for home use.

Divert ground nesting bees to new homes by simply sprinkling water on their nests. These bees prefer sunny, dry areas.

In most cases, you can coexist peacefully with bumblebees. Welcome them into your garden -- and encourage them to assist in pollination -- by planting flowers among your vegetable rows. But don't tempt them to become pests that need controlling: be sure to keep recycling cans filled with sticky soda cans closed tight and regular maintenance of cracks in exterior walls and attics is not only good for energy efficiency -- it'll keep bumblebees and other pests from moving in and causing problems.
