Flies Pest Control

Shoo Flies: Pest Control for Your Home and Garden

A buzzing house fly is simply irritating. But besides the annoyance, you might not realize there are plenty of good reasons to swat every fly that comes your way -- and keep them out of your home altogether.

Flies breed in animal waste and decaying organic material, such as garbage and rotting fruit fallen from trees. And as a result, they pick up bacteria and viruses that can make humans sick.

So how do you keep them at bay? Use screens. The easiest and best defense against flies is to keep them out of the house. Seal cracks around doors and windows and use well-fitted screens. Don't leave doors open.

In the yard and garden, flies pest control comes down to regular removal of dog droppings and fallen fruit. Keep garbage in containers with tight-fitting lids and try to place garbage containers far from entry doors. Once a fly has mated, it can produce several batches of eggs, each containing an average of 100 eggs. So while adult flies might bother you the most, it's more important to eliminate any potential for flies to lay eggs, and therefore control future production of adult flies.

Sticky fly paper can help eliminate flies in confined areas. But they don't provide a long-term remedy. Fly swatters are another time-tested method of pest control. Just be sure not to use a swatter near where food is being prepared.

While there are chemical pesticides for flies pest control, they're not nearly as effective as simply being vigilant about using screens and keeping doors shut -- and general cleanliness around the house and garden.
