Gnat Pest Control

Getting Rid of Gnats: Gnat Pest Control

Gnats look a lot like mosquitoes -- and they're about as annoying, too. But while mosquitoes fly around, you will rarely see a gnat fly indoors. They like to spend their time near potted plants or anywhere near soil or garbage. Similarly, outside gnats congregate where it's moist: in soil, compost, leaf and wood piles, around rocks and near any kind of fungi. If it's particularly wet, you'll know you have a gnat problem from the "slim trails" they leave behind.

To determine whether you have a gnat pest problem, place 1-inch cubes of sliced, raw potato cubes in potting soil, about 3/8-inch deep. Check for activity once or twice a week.

Prevent gnats from getting inside your home by screening windows and doors; and don't bring plants with infested soil indoors. Avoid using composted organic matter in your potting soil if it's not completely broken down -- and limit the amount of manure, blood meal and other similar organic materials you use for fertilizer. Empty any freestanding water left out, such as in bird baths.

You can avoid gnats by purchasing only pasteurized container mix or by treating potting soil with heat or steam before using it. That kills flies, algae and the microorganisms they feed on. Also, be sure to store your pasteurized potting soil in a container with a tight-fitting lid to prevent infestation. Insecticides are rarely, if ever, warranted to control gnats.
