Vole Pest Control

Voles are rodents, much like the common house mouse. A few things distinguish a vole from a mouse, including size, color, nose and tail. Voles are larger than mice, and can grow up to five inches long. Their tails are shorter than a mouse's tail, especially given their longer body length. They are usually a dark shade of black-brown or grey-brown, depending on the species. Voles also have a different shaped snout – their noses are blunter, and their ears are smaller.

Voles can make their habitats throughout most of the United States. They live outside in meadows and fields so homes built near large grassy areas are most susceptible to a vole infestation. Luckily, though, voles are not very good climbers, so they won't reach a structure's upper floors. Nonetheless, voles create systems of underground tunnels that can be very damaging, and even destroy, trees around your yard.

Tips for Vole Pest Control
The first thing to do to combat voles is to eliminate their habitats. Trim the grass near your home, and reduce mulch near trees to destroy nests and places that might allow voles to hide. Similarly, keep vegetation in nearby fields to a minimum, especially in the fall before winter snows come.

How can professional pest control protect your home against voles?
More substantial efforts in vole pest control can be performed by a pest control professional. Possible techniques include:
  • Mouse guards. A professional can set up mesh mouse-guards around trees in your yard.
  • Trapping. For a small area, trapping can be an effective way to reduce vole populations. For larger areas, though, trapping should be thought of more as a way to monitor vole populations.
  • Repellents. To ensure voles stay away from yards and orchards, many people rely on chemical repellants, along with other procedures.
